I have a new Win 8 Toshiba satellite with similar Update problem

When it tries to search for updates, the search process goes on and on, and you can't cancel or close the window; ie, it's effectively frozen. Even task Manager can't end the process! When I tried to restart, then the restart process got stuck, had to

do a Force Quit! Tried to change the style of receiving update from Automatic to Choose, and that process froze too!!! A real pain, I may bail on this laptop and go back to a Win 7. Any ideas?
