Unable to install automatic updates for Windows XP

I have tried everything I know for installing automatic updates and I am unable to reinstall updates.  I have had automatic updates until recently and I cannot reinstall it.  I am receiving an error code 0x80070424, I will appreciate any input, I'm very

frustrated.  I have Windows XP professional with service pack 3.
