Guest Jeff Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 OK, building servers here. Licensing costs a lot of money. Standard 2003 r2 supports 8 smp processors, Enterprise windows 2003 r2 supports 16. Does that mean if I have 4 - quad core processors, Windows Standard is not an option as this will equate to 16 cores? Also what happens on XP Pro when you run a Quad core and it only supports a dual processor?
Guest John John Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Re: Dual processor Quad Core Quad Processor? No, licensing is per processor not per core. Multicore processors count as 1 processor. If you run XP on a quad core you will have 4 processors showing in device manager. In Server 2003 Standard you will be able to use 4 Quad Cores and you should see 16 processors in the Device Manager. If you put 8 quad cores in a Server 2003 Enterprise box you should (at least in theory) have 32 virtual processors! Of course, I haven't ever seen such a machine, let alone work on one so I don't know if the Device Manager will see all those processors, according to Microsoft it should.
