can not update ot IE 10 because the old and apparenlty well-know Error Code 9C48 with IE 9 on Win 7

I have the old and well-known problem with Win 7 (Home Ed) that Windows Update continues to try and update IE 9, always failing with error code 9C48.  I have tried all of the recommended fixes and tools had have had no success.  Unfortunately, this problem

now seems to also prevent me from updating to IE 10.  Is there any way I can go directly to IE 10?  Are there any new fixes for the IE 9 error code 9C48 problem?  (Many of the suggested fixes for the IE 9 problem require that the IE 9 be uninstalled -- I do

not have that option on this machine).
