Windows 8 stuck after restarting after update

I recently bought a Sony VAIO E Series laptop with Windows 8 loaded on it.Everything was working fine till today when it asked me to restart my computer to perform an update. I did just as it said, and the update was being installed. After that the computer turned off so I restarted it, it shows me the VAIO sign and then after that

it is just stuck on a background screen, and shows the time and date on the bottom left and also the wifi and battery charge signal. That is all, it does not do anything else or show anything else? I have pressed numerous buttons but nothing happens.I have also restarted the computer by pressing the power button several times but still it boots up to the same background screen with time and date. I do not even see the cursor anywhere on the screen.

I have tried to get in to safe mode by pressing shift + F8 during boot up, I have inserted the windows Drivers and Utilities CD that it came with, but none of that does anything.

Please help me figure this out. Thanks.
