Why won't windows update work on windows 8?

Updates have stopped working on my windows 8 pc. When I check for new updates via control panel/windows update it says that updates are available but then windows gets stuck on 'downloading updates'.There is no activity on my router so windows isn't actually downloading anything.What gives?
