constant failure configuring windows updates despite fix it center scan

my new lenovo g780 notebook tries to load 50 updates every time i shut down.  when i turn it on it says "failure configuring windows update", then tries to revert changes, and when it can't, shuts down then restarts.  i have tried the microsoft fix it

center, but it doesn't detect any issues so doesn't make any changes!  a friend tried to open/close/make changes in the safe mode with no success.  how can i get this fixed?
