Windows Defender won't activate

My new Lenovo desktop came with McAfee "free Trial" which I let expire.. I Uninstalled McAfee then used the McAfee uninstall tool to wipe it out completely. I can see No other virus protection on this box. When I try to activate MD I get that old message

box about Defender turned off and to check the Action Center for other virus programs. The AC show the all Red boxes to activate the windows defender software but when I click to activate I'm taken to the windows8os/windows/system32 library location where

I find NO executable Defender software.. When I access windows defender from the CHARMS bar same result.. I've been to the MSServices Defender was manual and I changed it to automatic. The next time I went to MSservices it waS BACK mANUAL?? My only success

was in activating the Windows firewall after the McAfee was gone. I'm going crazy with this issue, and I thought I could fix just about anything.. Help.
