windows xp Hard wired office nework and scanning between computers

My wife and I share a Canon MP270 multipurpose printer on our hard wired office network.  I can print my documents on the printer which is attached to her computer.  She runs Microsoft XP Home edition and I run Windows 7 Professional.  I can't get the

scanner function on the printer to scan documents to files on my computer or as attachments to email.  Her computer knows mine is attached for printing functions but not scanner.  I need help about setting up the nework on these two computers for all functions

to work.  I have a router that connects them to each other and to the internet.
