Windows update isn't working. It doesn't find new updates, in fact, it hasn't done anything for some time, and so other programs aren't working either.

Microsoft Forefront doesn't analyze the computer, and it shows a box with 'error 0x80070424', but when I look for how can I fix that, I see everything has to do with the problem with the updates. The Fix-it Troubleshooter says there isn't any poblem in

the system, but obviously there's one.

I've also tried restarting windows services in services.msc, but neither 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service' nor 'Windows update' files are there; it's not that their status is stopped, they don't even appear on the services list.

I cannot try to reinstall the updater again, because when I try that, it says it's already installed, but while it doesn't appear in the programmes list it can't be deleted to install a new one. Everything on the support web has failed.

What should I try?

Thanks
