Windows XP Activation message prevents logging in to Windows

This afternoon, after a re-start suggested by Security Essentials, I find my self unable to log in to Windows XP. When I try to log-in I get a message that Windows needs to be activated. When I click OK I get a message that Windows is activated already which

asks me to cancel. When I cancel I get logged off and sent back to the log in screen. I am stuck in this loop preventing log-in. No amount of subsequent re-starts is getting me out of the loop.

 

I also am unable to start Windows in safe mode using F8.

 

Is there some way around this loop which is preventing me starting up Windows?
