how to change hibernate parameters?

When I turn off the computer with hibernate it automatically clicks back on at varying times from 6 to 12 hours. Is there any way to instruct it to remain asleep until I turn it on? Old Dell PC with windows XP, originally, recently changed to IE8. Problem

has been continuous. Thank you.
