I cannot install Windows Updates on Vista. Error Code is 80246008 Windows Update encountered an unkn

I cannot install Windows Updates on Vista. Error Code is 80246008 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.  Help had two sugestions one being to check to see if Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running and I don't have that service installed,

is that the problem.  What do I do?
