changing drive install letter from d to c

tried to do an uograde from svr00 to svr03, i have a 3 phys hd (ide)

2 drives on a stripe (sata) and 2 scsi drives striped, now my boot.ini is

right

0/0/0/1, but it shows as my d (letter) drive, can i swap c and d?

during the upgrade it failed and there was no way to go forward or back so i

unplugged the sata and the scsi, i guess thats how the letters got messed up

another interesting thing when the system boots, it posts then polls the

scsi and drive 1 says its c, and drive 2 says its d, then it polls the sata.

but even w/the scsi saying they are c and d it still picked up the master ide

on chnnl 0

thanks

That won't work, it will most likely send the server in a reboot loop at

the next restart. The article only applies if the drive letter was

change after installation, it is meant to restore the drive letter to

its original assignement.

You must reinstall the operating system, there is no other way to change

this.

Re: changing drive install letter from d to c

Why won't it work?

I've used this method on Windows Workstations before without any problems

and the KB article says it works for Server although I've never tried it on

one.

Re: changing drive install letter from d to c

I don't want to provoke or insult you but I doubt that you have changed

the boot volume letter from its installed assignment on any Windows

operating system using this (or any other) method! Please read

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249321/

When you install Windows all kinds of registry entries referencing to

the boot volume drive letter are created. The system folders, user

profiles and what not are all pointing to the drive letter on which

Windows was installed, in the case of the original poster everything

points to his drive D: Now, if you go in the registry and change only

one entry so that only the drive letter assignment is changed everything

else in the registry will point to the wrong drive. In the case of the

OP, when he reboots the server and tries to log on the system will look

for his profile on D:\Documents and Settings, but now that drive is

designated as C, so he will not be able to log on because there will be

no D: drive, or if there is one it will not contain the profiles. Even

if he changes the profile location or the profile path in the registry

and even if he could then log on there would be all kinds of errors

because nothing else points to the right place, the operating system

would be hopelessly broken.

For your procedure to work you would have to change all registry

references to the D: drive to reflect the new C: drive letter

assignment. That is a nearly impossible gargantuan task! The only way

to change the drive letter onto which Windows is installed it to

reinstall it.

Re: changing drive install letter from d to c

The information here should help:

Overview of PNP enumeration and hard disk drive letter assignments in

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825668

You may want to disconnect disks before you install, they can be brought

back online after Windows is installed. Make sure you have no other

external drives, removable drives or card readers connected during the

Windows installation.

Good luck,

Re: changing drive install letter from d to c

microsoft says "Important When you upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows

Server 2003, the number that was assigned to a disk in Windows 2000 will not

be the same as the number that will be assigned to that same disk in Windows

Server 2003. Only the disk number changes; the drive letter does not change."

and that is what happened, but they dont really say how to fix it, there is

a link, i will chk it out, thanks for all your help , will let you know what

i find out

Re: changing drive install letter from d to c

This is where you use your bare metal backup and return the server to

its previous condition ;-)

Let us know how you make out.
