Epson Stylus Color 400 doesn't respond to computer commands

Although it has worked well for the last three years, my Epson Stylus Color 400 has suddenly stopped responding to computer commands.   I have checked all connections and have ensured cartridges are full and OK.   After switching power off and disconnecting

the computer from the printer,  then pressing the paper-feed button and the power-on button together followed by releasing both buttons (all according to the Epson Manual) prints out a number and alignment check correctly.   What have I missed?
