Windows 7 hangs on auto updates

My computer does an occasional auto update when I shut it down for the night. However, in the morning, I find that it is still trying to download and is just locked, so I have to hold down the off button until the computer turns off. This has been going

on for the last 6 months, and I find there are a growing number of "files" appearing on my drive that I can't seem to get rid of. Can anyone help me with this?
