Lost access to hard disk files.

After using SYSTEM RESTORE, my desktop has lost access to all my written data files and pictures on the hard disk. 

I tried a backup or reboot disk made many months ago but the drive will not read it!

How might I restore access to "My Documents" and other folders?

 

I am using Windows XP with all current updates to Feb/Mar 2013
