system slow down after installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

For years I have used AVAST PR and loved it, but not the yearly ransom I had to pay.  So, a couple of days ago I decided to install Microsoft Security Essentials after reading good reviews of it as well as Microsoft brags about how it did NOT slow down

your system.  Now it takes forever to load a web page and my email, games are "jerky", download of photos are "scanned for virus" which I surely don't need to waste time on, and other symptoms of a sluggish system that used to be nice and fast and smooth.Is there something in the settings I can change to stop this agony or do I need to revert to AVAST?I am running Windows XP, system is clean of any virus, trojans etc.   This issue only arose after installing MSE.
