Windows XP 2002 System Restore and Cannot Update Windows

Hello, have an older XP computer and had to restore system to original state. No install disk.... computer came loaded with Windows XP 2002 - Service Pack 2. Had a problem with Unmountable_Boot Volume and the only way to solve the issue was to use this

function available to restore the system.Since doing so am unable to update Windows XP. Know I have to install SP3 and not sure if there are any other updates needed before doing this.. Automatic Updates is not working and cannot update windows directly from the Windows site. Have upgraded the Browser

to IE8... is this a problem?...Need some help as to "how" to get this computer updated... don't know what order to do it in, etc...Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.
