Guest mfitzg Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Hi, I use an OEM copy of Windows XP SP2 Home. Recently, I updated CDBurnerXP Pro 3 to version 4 which downloaded into a different folder than the Pro 3 version. I then attempted to delete the Pro 3 version through Add/Delete Programs. However, the uninstall failed when a message window opened saying, "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the CDBurnerXP Pro 3 disk and click ok." I never had a disk for the program as it was a free download from the website. I clicked the ok button a few times to no avail. I then clicked the cancel button a few times until the message window disappeared. I went into the program's file folder, found the unistall file, clicked it , and the program was deleted without incident until I looked in the Add/Remove Program to find that the Pro 3 version entry was still there. I went to the CDBurnerXP website, found a download for the Pro 3 version, and tried to download it. It would not install because this time, I got 2 Windows Installer message windows which blocked the download. The first window said, "Preparing to Install". The second one contained the same message as before re: the non-existent CD-Rom. I had to click the cancel and close buttons on the message windows several times to get them to close. The download would not install. I ran a full virus (TrendMicro Interenet Suite) and spyware sweep (Webroot SpySweeper) which found no problems. However, when I tried to open the application, SpywareBlaster, to run a scan as well, it would not open as it was blocked by the same 2 Windows Installer Message Windows as before. I had to close the message windows several times again to get them to close and allow SpywareBlaster to open. After it was opened, it worked well...no problems. I searched the website's forums and tried their suggestions (which I found out later came from MS Help and Support) which were: unregistering/re-registering the Windows Installer, running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, etc. When I tried running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, something went wrong as my computer screen flickered, the program window disappeared, there was no entry in my startup menu for the utility, and no prompt for choice of program(s) to clean up. In fact, after that failed install, my computer began acting strangely in other ways, and I was finally forced to perform a System Restore which corrected the strange behavior. However, the entry for the Pro 3 version remains in Add/Remove and now, not only do I get the Windows Installer Error Messages whenever I attempt to open SpywareBlaster, but also at Windows Startup when opening SpywareGuard. It also affected the opening of other applications such as Registry Mechanic, MP3 Gain, MP3 WMA Converter, and possibly others. I have not yet checked every application to verify which ones are affected. I have searched many forums and help sites and tried every suggestion that I could understand. Some are way beyond my level of understanding. One suggestion was to identify the source of the problem by examining the Event Viewer Logs. I did that and the first warning came when I tried uninstalling the Pro 3 version which read, " Detection of product '{896D642C-7125-44F0-AC49-A23ABF82209C}', feature 'Complete', component '{452820AF-7690-4898-B0A4-DA4B6C6DE8DF}' failed. The resource 'C:\Program Files\CDBurnerXP Pro 3\Avi\' does not exist." There are lots of other warnings from the past few days after that re: opening the affected programs. I tried uninstalling/re-installing the affected programs I found thus far, but the Windows Installer messages continue to block the opening of the programs until I eventually am able to close the message windows. The affected apps seem to work fine after opening. It seems that Windows is still trying to uninstall/install the program, but a component in the program code was never there. What do I do? The most common suggestion is running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, but after the weird experience I had before, I am reluctant to try it again. Is there a solution? If so, can someone help walk me through it? This is more than an annoyance. BTW, none of this occurs on my family's other 2 user accounts. Please help. Thank you.
