Windows XP, SP3

I had Microsoft Security Essentials 4.1.522.0 on my computer and I had no trouble to update it, but I could not upgrade it to Version 4.2.223.1.

The auto update sign kept  popping up on my toolbar and it said I had Microsoft Security Essential 4.2.223.1 to be downloaded and installed.

I tried to download it but it said the file had no bytes and at the end it said some documents could not be downloaded.

However, the auto update sign kept appearing on my toolbar.

Finally this morning I went to Microsoft website and downloaded the MSE 4.2.223.1 and installed it.

After the installation is finished, suddenly my real time protection of this program is turned off and I have not been able to turn it on.

Please tell me what is wrong.  Should I remove the Version 4.2.223.1 and reinstall the Version 4.2.223.1 so my computer can be protected?

Thank you.
