windows vista Backing up files from my computer to an External Drive

I try to regularly back up files from my computer to an external hard drive, through windows backup and restore centre. However it has come to my attention that the amount I have saved (GB’s) has doubled in size to the amount

I have actually used on my hard drive. I don’t know a lot about how it all works but I see that every time I do a backup of my computer a folder is opened on the external drive labelled with the date it was performed. Each one of these folders is stored in

a master (?) folder labelled with the name of my documents folder from my computer. When I hover my pointer arrow over this master folder all it says regarding it's capacity is that the folder is larger than 0 bytes? I have deducted that the folder is occupying

at least 200 GB’s of space on the external drive. One of the things I don't understand is why each of the folders that are opened for each back contains 0 bytes when I hover my pointer over them also.

I apologise if it’s difficult to understand what I’m trying to say but I don’t know how else to describe it.

What I’d like to know is whether it is safe to remove all the backup folders prior to the latest one and hopefully create more space on my external drive, which is a Seagate expansion drive incidentally.
