What is the story with Java?

I took Java completely off of my computer when all the hype came out about it on the news a couple of months or so ago. I figured that they had what ever the problems where fixed so I would try it again. the new version #7 update 17 I believe. I have not

had it on the computer two days and Microsoft Security Essentials picked up a Java/Exploit problem. I realize that someone is exploiting Java  to gain access to your computer or whatever, and it is not actually Java that is doing whatever is being done.

When does this end? What is the current thinking on having Java on your computer?
