Whenever I try to install KB2756872 the installation fails and the update is removed. Other updates applied at the same time also fail and are removed. KB2771431 is already applied. In order to allow other updates to go ahead I hid KB2756872. However, soon I found that other updates were failing- not all of them, but I presume some updates are dependent on KB2756872. So now these other updates fail, even when applied "solo": KB2809289,

KB2742614, and KB2812822. I have managed to apply quite a few others, by applying them solo one by one.My antivirus is Windows Defender. My machine is a 2-month-old laptop on which the only applications are ones that I have applied one by one- I didn't move the system across from another machine, so there is no accumulation of bits and pieces of software that

might get in the way (just what Lenovo puts on a new laptop). Software installed is Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010, Outlook 2007, and Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere 12, Mindjet MindManager and Nokia Suite to connect with my mobile. I use Firefox

rather than IE.I'm particularly concerned about this because I am relying on Windows Defender as my anti-virus- I keep finding that the problem with KB2756872 is getting in the way of applying Defender definition updates.I have another Windows 8 machine (an HP desktop) which has had no problem so far with updates, and has KB2756872 installed.I'm a bit unsettled by having such a basic problem in my use of Windows 8 on my most used machine, and would be very grateful for a solution!
