How do i find out if i need a disk to format my computer?

I have a laptop hp pavilion dm4-1253cl Entertainment PC. Everytime my computer starts up it has an error and i have to force it to shutdown because it would wait for hours to a program to close. So im going to reset my computer to when i first got it but

have no clue how. I am moving my things to flashdrives now. How do i find out if i have that restore option in my computer or if need the disk? 

I also read the you need the software for my other devices. Does the software for the fingerprint scanner thats built in to my laptop go with the cd if i need it?
