my computer is stuck installing updates

My computer is stuck at installing 9 of 9 updates. Screen says ," keep your pc plugged in till this is done" . I searched this problem on this forum and some of the solutions asked to install recovery media ( or something like that). What do i do. The

computer is not responsive to any input. I am running windows 8 pro, 64 bit, full edition. My Son built the computer for me and now is away in the military.
