windows xp Titles keep disappearing from under my pictures

Hi,  I'm running Windows XP,  and in the "My Pictures" folder, I have over 17,000 files.  It keeps screwing up on me however.  One minute the names of the files are underneath them, the next, they are all gone.  

I read Zack's answer as to how to fix this by right-clicking on a blank area of the screen and disabling the hide option.  But when I do it and go to the view tab he talks about, there isn't a hide file function to begin with!

This is really weird.  It comes and goes and I'd like to stop it for good.
