USB problem?

Hi I'm new to the forum,be gentle with me as I'm a real novice when it comes to puters, my problem is that I've had problems with my printer,so, bought a new one,tried to install it and got this message, issues stopping instalation,this file does not exist or is the incorrect version and is reqd for installation to continue, the file is part of windows and is prov on the windows installation CD. file usbstore.inf. version 5.1.2600.0 location windows\inf.

Ok,first this reads like gobbledy gook to me and secondly I don't have the cd as I had to have my comp, reformatted and the shop used their own disk instead of waiting while I found mine.Sorry this is soooo long but, I don't know how else to explain,I'm running XP home edition.

Hope someone can help.Please.

Right on My Computer then Properties then click the Hardware tab and then Device Manager.

 

Tell us if there any yellow question marks listed there and against what.

Regardless of what may be wrong I would urge you to get in touch with the shop and find out exactly what he did with regard to your Operating system. You may find that he restored your existing system and that the discs you have at home will still be recognised.

 

What discs do you actually have? Are they XP discs or are they from the manufacturer only to be used in their computers?

Hi beeceebee, I think I may have mislead you, I had my comp. reformatted about 8months or so ago and it was working fine including my hp printer until only a couple of days ago,thats when I bought a new printer because the old one was 4yr old and I thought it was that at fault, it was only when I tried to install the new one I got the error message.oops sorry forgot to say, the disks I have came with comp. medion.

Whether or not all devices in device manager showed ok try this anyway.

In Device Manager expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Find the Host Controllers and remove them. Reboot the computer and Windows will reinstall them.

 

If that doesn't work look for the usbstor.info file to see if it exists.

In Folder Options>View tick Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Click Apply>OK

 

Then either search for the file or navigate to it in the C:\Windows\Inf folder.

No you are not being stupid at all!

 

Try this and see if you find the files.

 

Just go to search on the start menu. click on search for files or folders then click more advanced options and finally put a dot in the search hidden files and folders. Then type in ubstor.info and see what comes up. (search system folders should already have a dot in it if not put one there.)

 

Don't let the language in the reply throw you. Just see if you can find the files and get back to us.

Did you uninstall your old printer before trying to install your new one - if not, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs for your old printer. Restart your computer and follow the instructions below.

 

You can download the file from here - yours may be corrupt, so it's worth a go.

 

I have checked it and virus scanned it so it's clean and the correct file.

 

USBSTOR.INF download - free inf files

 

Save it to your desktop and follow the instructions below.

 

Click on your start menu, then over to Run - like this

Then type in cmd - like this

[ATTACH]203[/ATTACH]

Then, once you have the black box open, type exactly what is typed underlined in red. The rest of the writing willbe slightly different on your pc ...

The only bit that may not work is the 'rename' part - if your file is missing it will give you an error. Ignore it and carry on to the next line.

 

All done, reboot your computer and try the install again.

Hi Tootech, followed your instructions to the letter,but, when I was typing in the black box I got a message,the syntax of the command is incorrect after rename, not sure if I've done something wrong,but I kept checking and it looked ok.Tried to install printer again and still got the same message.Now i feel like crying boo hoo !!!!!

No worries, lets try again and explain it a little.

 

I'll write the command and where you see <space>, just press the spacebar once.

 

cd<space>desktop

 

rename<space>c:\windows\inf\usbstor.inf<space>usbstor.bak

 

There might be an error after you typed the above if the file doesn't exist - that's fine, move on.

 

copy<space>usbstor.inf<space>c:\windows\inf\*.*

Ok, done that, i suppose at the end i should press enter? because i have, and get a message ie. the system cannot find the path specified o file(s) copied.

Ok, lets try another way of doing it.

 

Go to your desktop, hopefully where you have a new downloaded copy of usbstor.inf, hover your mouse over the file and do a right mouse click.

 

Select 'copy', ie single left mouse click.

 

Go to the start menu, click on My Computer.

 

Then double click on C drive, then double click on the Windows folder, look down until you find a folder called Inf.

 

Double click it to open the folder.

 

Now, with your mouse pointer in the Inf folder, do a right click and select paste - single left click.

 

It should look something like this

If all goes to plan, a copy of usbstor.inf will be copied to the Inf folder.

 

Phew, reboot your pc and try your printer install again.

sorry! you must be really fed up with me, but I can't find an inf file in windows.I can follow everything you say but can't find the inf folder!!!

The INF folder is normally a hidden folder.

 

In an earlier post, Randy gave you instructions to show hidden files & folders, so I assumed you could see them.

 

Lets get that sorted.

 

Open Windows Explorer.

 

Go to Tools, then Folder Options.

 

Click on the second tab 'View'

 

Look down for 'Hidden Files and Folders'

 

Untick/tick the boxes so they look like the ones in the red box. Click apply and close Windows Explorer again.

Now see if you can see the INF folder

YES!!!!!done it, its installed,absolutely BRILL,been here all day, and its thanks to you that i've done it, I'm over the moon.:)wasn't concentrating and forgot to look in hidden files,now one last request please, how do I remove that usb store icon from my desktop.

Great News!!!

 

Personally I think you should leave the icon as a special tribute to Tootech, :) but if you really must and you don't need it just right click and delete it.

Just one thing - don't forget you can now see all your Windows system files - it would be a good idea to go back to Folder Opions and hide all the Windows files again.
