Using voice recognition software to transcribe a downloaded tape

I am transcribing dictation downloaded by Express Scripts.  Is there a way I can make Vista's speech recognition software work to transcribe from a tape?  Just playing the dictation and having the microphone set at the speaker to hear the dictation doesn't

work.  Thanks.
