windows updates fail with 0x80080008

We have run microsft removal tool, spybot, superantispyware, ms defender, Malware bytes and found nothing.  We cannot update the office file validation add in or either of the recommended updates 2632503 and 2492386.   We have been able to run defender

update 915597 and 2809289 cumulative for ie8.  We have run the updater fixit tool in both std and agressive modes.  We have run sfc /scannow.  Have run the fix that reregisters the dll's & is named register.bat.  I have run out of patience, links & caffeine. 

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated, I am missing something don't know what!  PC is intel quad core w/xp pro 25 gig used on 500 gig hd, 2 gig of ram.
