Windows 7 Update is Not Working.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I don't get an error message, what happens is it stays on the same update for hours. When i turned off the computer it had 40 updates and on update 32 it would not budge for 3 hours. I had to shut off via the power button and

tried to update while i was logged into the computer and watched it not progress at all while installing. Can someone please help, i don't want to restore to factory settings if i can help it.
