I no longer seem to be able to play my Movie Files (from my Digital Camera) on Windows Media Player. It just says 'Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file'.

 

But i used to be able to play them all the time. I am not sure what has suddenly changed on my PC to make it suddenly not work? I have other movie files that have been converted to different formats and they still play so i know my PC can play movies but not the Movie FIles.

 

Any advice?

Is this a full digital movie camera or a digital still camera with a video option. Most of the latter use quicktime and you would need to convert it for Media Player.

I suspect media player corruption or a codec problem.

On checking, 'Quick Time' does indeed play the video. But i am still baffled as to why Media Player does not play them, when i know they definitely used to??

Ok, so we now the issue is in Media Player alone, and not your files or operating system.

 

What version of media player are you using?

Windows Media Player has different versions, the current version being 11.

 

If you can see the menu's, go to Help, then About Windows Media Player - post the version number.

IF you are using a digital still camera that has a video option in it almost certainly is recording in quicktime format. Window Media Player will only support much older versions of quicktime

 

Information about the Multimedia file types that Windows Media Player supports

 

If that is the kind of camera you are using, the videos will not play in Windows Media Player without them being converted using some third party software.

 

Can you please advise what type of camera you are using and what the file extensions are on your movie files?

 

Have you ever had to "do anything" to the videos before to make them play?

no worries. I reckon i must have converted the files in the past, which then made them work on Media Player. Thanks for all your advice though.

Just on the off chance Seth may be right, go to control panel, Add or remove programs, then scroll down the list till you find Windows Media player. Click to uninstall. This will roll it back to version 10. Try that and see if they play then. If so, update Media player back to version 11, and see if that cures the problem. If they play in version 10, but not in an update back to 11, I won't be surprised, a lot of folk have gone back to version 10, even though the security is not as good. (at the moment critical updates for version 10 are still being issued by Microsoft)
