Swap out the drive for a known-working one. If that takes care of the issue, your optical drive has probably died. You can test it by putting it into another computer (you don't have to actually install it, just connect it). If it doesn't work on the other computer you know for sure it should be discarded. Drives don't last forever and, assuming this is a desktop, they are inexpensive to replace. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" When you close the drawer, the switch causes the drive to signal to Windows that the disk has been changed (or just inserted). If the switch dies, the drive will never signal. Not all drives feature this. Most (but not all) desktop drives don't because they can pick the disk change up from the motorised drawer.

I've had several drives that are still detected by bios and windows but do nothing when you insert a disk. If you listen to the drive can you hear the disk spin up when you insert it? Try several disks, burned and pressed variety.
