jlay Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Having recently re-installed the default defrag prog. it now refuses to start , freezing up at the 3% stage ; also I cannot go into safe mode ( tapping F8 on boot up ),it just reverts to the normal desktop start-up. Capacity of hard drive is 149Gbs of which there is 44.7Gbs (29%) of free space , so there is enough for a defrag to be done;I've just added 56Gbs( inc. in the 149Gbs total) of scenery files ( for use in a flight sim programme) where it recommends an immediate defrag. Maybe I should also get some more space on the hard drive. Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 What do you mean "recently re-installed" John? The windows defrag tool cannot simply be uninstalled and re-installed. Quote
RandyL Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 As stated above you can't install the Windows defrag as it is part of Windows. Do you mean you uninstalled another defrag utility? As far as going into safemode it can be tricky with the timing of tapping the keys. Try a few more times. If I understand you right you have 44.7GBs left after installing sims. Is that right? What do you mean by the default defrag program? Do you mean Windows Defrag? For Windows defrag to appear to stop or hang at a certain point early is normal. However that coupled with the fact you can't get into safemode concerns me. Please explain more. You may have a failing drive but it's hard to say at this point. Tootech Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Just checked your posts - Disktirx was the one you tried. Back to the current defrag - how long do you leave it at 3%, and is the drive busy, or has it stopped actually defragging? Quote
jlay Posted November 23, 2008 Author Posted November 23, 2008 Defrag I mean the Windows system tool DEFRAG which I've reverted too after un-installing the Disktrix programme which didn't work , to put it politely ! I thought that by doing this the Windows defrag would automatically work as there are no further options There is 44.7 Gbs of free space(29%) left AFTER installing a lot of new files(56 Gbs) I left the defrag open for 2 hours while it was stuck on 3% with no movement. Hope this explains more than in my previous message.......sorry. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Was your screensaver running when you tried the window defrag? (it cant be ) Have you tried to get into safemode again and what happened? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Seth Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 I suggest you run hard drive error correction and then try the defrag: Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. Click Properties, and then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed. Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start. Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer.Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check. jlay Posted November 23, 2008 Author Posted November 23, 2008 (edited) Defrag Thanks Seth, I've gone thru the 4 phases of Error-checking,this finished after at least 30 mins & came up with a message :'Disc Check complete' I then tried again with the defrag programme but then got message 'defragger is not installed; double click on Add or Remove in Control Panel ; click the instal tab & follow instructions ! Problem is that there is no defrag instal tab showing in the Add/Remove window to click on ? Edited November 23, 2008 by jlay Quote
Tootech Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Have a look here, the first part of the post details a couple of fixes, and if they don't work, it tells you how to install the defrag tool. How To: Fix Windows Built in Defragmenter Quote
Mara Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 I'm far, far from an expert on computer technology but wonder if I may suggest using O&O Defrag program (freeware)? - at least during the interim. Download O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware - FileHippo.com (The paid for version is faster and fancier looking but the freeware version works wonderfully plus is so easy to use). Quote
RandyL Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I'm no expert on this matter either but I never saw a need to run a third party defrag. A third party program is what caused this problem in the first place. There are plenty of options available to fix this. Quote We are all members helping other members. Dalo Harkin Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I recommended O&O to Mara when she had an earlier issue with another 3rd party defrag - I use O&O defrag as I said to Mara - but the average user sees no benefit from anything other than the windows inbuilt version. jlay Posted November 25, 2008 Author Posted November 25, 2008 Many thanks Tootech, I followed the link into Andrea's & found the solution using COMMAND PROMPT on the black screen and it has worked ! ! The integrated Windows defragger actually started ! it took about 5 hours to complete but now all is working a lot faster. This is a GREAT website to use for PC problems & it's free....................I'll have to make a don. Quote

Is the windows defragmentation tool working or not? Quote
Tootech Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Thats's good news - which one do you prefer, O & O or Windows defrag? Quote
jlay Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 Defrag Windows defrag. prog. is now behaving itself & working fine ; I've also downloaded O&O just in case Windows stalls again.:) Quote
RandyL Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Good to hear jlay. If the Windows defrag doesn't work for some reason don't be too quick to install a third party program. I would suggest to fix Windows before making it worse. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else.
