All the files in my documents turned to little squares

All the files in my document folders changed from english to little square 0s'.  I need to transfer all of my documents to my new Windows 8 pro., but with the files unreadable, I don't want to transfer a bunch of square Os'. Can someone out there please

help me? How do I change back to English?
