Problems with 'picture attachments in Word documents

Many of my work documents have our company logo attached as a picture in a Header. Quite often but not always when I open a document (it could have been made by me or anyone else on a PC or another Mac), the logo (picture) just shows as a black square

and will print like that too. We use dropbox and the best way at the moment for me to print a doc that shows like this is to reopen it on a PC. Obviously this is unacceptable. Please help.
