Guest Steve Freides Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 My guess is the functional equivalent of XP/Pro w/ 1 gb of memory is Vista Business w/ 2 or 4 gb of memory. What do the rest of you say? I'm considering my first Vista machine. Thanks in advance. -S-

Don't forget a better video card in the Vista machine equivalent to offload some of the graphics functions to. Shouldn't neglect hard disk drive size either. Personally - I would get at least a 3GHz Core2Duo with at LEAST 3GB of memory, 160GB+ HDD, 256+MB video card... And the fastest BUS speed/memory speed I could get. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Guest Jupiter Jones [MVP] Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Re: Vista equvalent of XP/Pro w/ 1 gb of memory Steve; Windows Vista Home Premium is close to Windows XP Home while Windows XP Pro is close to Windows Vista business as you said. Windows Vista Home Basic and Vista Ultimate are new and have no real comparison. Your idea of memory is about right. But also you may need more video and processing power. While some computers perform faster with Windows Vista than windows XP, for the most part, you will need more of everything to run Windows Vista as compared to Windows XP. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "Steve Freides" <steve@fridayscomputer.com> wrote in message news:5mldnoFe4u46U1@mid.individual.net... > My guess is the functional equivalent of XP/Pro w/ 1 gb of memory is > Vista Business w/ 2 or 4 gb of memory. WinXP was released five years ago and in the meantime, the hardware has been improved beyond the amount of RAM installed. > What do the rest of you say? That depends on your needs. My son, for instance, needed a fast machine for his online games (ultimate frame rates required). So I ordered this pretty expensive "XPS 710 Gamers Master" DELL machine, consisting of the following main components: - Windows Vista Ultimate - Intel Core 2 Quad-Core QX6600 Processor - 4GB Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz - nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX (768MB) DX10 - Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Music 7.1 - 500GB Serial ATA RAID 0 It took a couple of weeks while DELL was trying to get that system work and eventually, DELL cancelled my order due to "compatibility problems". WOW! I was just selecting from the components that they offered... Next attempt - I ordered the Siemens-Fujitsu "Scaleo Xtreme" as is: - Windows Vista Home Premium - Intel Core 2 Quad-Core QX6600 Processor - 4GB Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz - nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS (640MB) DX10 - Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 - 1TB (2x500MB) Serial ATA II When turning on the first time, this message appeared: Windows Vista cannot be installed - HAL missing. Press any key to continue... (loop) Probably the similar problem causing DELL to give up finally. Well, it took at least half an hour to get Vista installed. Since then, my son is the luckiest man on earth with his unbeaten frame rates... -- d-d
