Why does my mouse pointer change from pointer to swirling circle on my Word document?

I opened a Word document sent from my work location to my home location.  Work runs Word 2003.  Home is Word 2010.  Upon opening the document at home the mouse pointer takes on the character of the swirling circle that is obnoxious and won't stop.  When

I mouse outside the Word document - it resumes it's normal character.  Over the Word document it resumes the swirling circle.  Does anyone have an answer for this?
