Music cd won't play and can I add extra speakers?

I inserted a music cd into my laptop but it won't play. Also, can I plug in extra desk speakers into my Toshiba laptop? I don't like the sound from the laptop speakers. Can I plug them into my monitor that is pluged into my laptop? Just an old lady and

not too techy.
