Stop windows defender updates

Surely Im not the only person with this problem.... How do I stop windows defender updates (that vast numbers of people don't want or need) whilst keeping the standard updates?

Using Windows 7, I've turned off Windows Defender since I prefer an alternative security software package.

Updates are set to notify before download - since I rightly don't want MS sticking whatever they want on my machine without asking.

Problem is, every day now there seems to be large Defender update that slows and stalls my machine whilst the notification loads.

 

I then have to go through the daily routine of opening updates, unchecking the defender box, right click and hide and okay it in order to get rid of this bug. Every single day.

 

Please tell me there is a way around this...
