Why are my .pdf files showing a grey pages when I view the ones that I've save to my computer?

When I open my .pdf files that I have scanned and saved to my computer, I cannot read the document.  All I see are grey pages where the words/pictures should be.  When I open .pdf files from the Internet, most of the file shows, but not all.  Some pictures

are grey rectangles.

I am running Windows 7 and have updated Adobe files to the most current version.  My scanner is an HP Deskjet 3050.
