automatic updates have stopped for some time and manually intiating update returns no update but giv

Updates have stopped and I no longer get alerts about failed updates.  Manual initiation of update doesnt retrieve any files but I get a message requiring the computer to be resarted to complete installation.  This does nothing.  The update page date fields

for "Most recent check" and "last update" always show "never".  The update trouble shooter utility claims to fix a problem each time it is run but does not  cure this problem.  I tried restoring Windows to the date of the last successful updates but this fails

each time. ??????
