what is the difference between xp mode and compatibility tab of a software？

Dear，

    if a software have some copatibility problem on windows 7. Which method is better to sovle the problem，xp mode or compatibility tab in application properties dialogue box？And could you please explain the details of the diference between them . Thanks.
