Brand new laptop. Windows 8. Windows update/control panel issues. HELP!

Just brought a new laptop running windows 8. Whenever I attempt to get into windows update in the control panel, the entire window freezes and is impossible to exit out of. If I try to use task manager and end the task, the entire computer goes to a blank

screen and I have no choice but to log off or restart. I have tried to troubleshoot problems and it found error 0x80070490, which it repaired but I am still having this problem. Any help would be appreciated as I just brought this product and am very distressed

about it not working. Thanks.
