Guest Curt Christianson Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users Hi Angel, I completely understand your reluctance towards e-mail. I was like that for a while, until I found that there just weren't that many people interested in me. I've received two un-solicited e-mails in my life, both from NG's, and BOTH to thank me profusely in person for the assistance I gave them. My head couldn't fit through a doorway for a week afterwards. I do converse with some MVP types on a semi-regular basis, and have never been told to get lost. This my dear is *entirely* up to you. Just remove NOSPAM from my header. I will certainly understand either way. Take very good care! Oh, and a pen that recognizes hen-scratching...I'll get one FIRST!! Guest Curt Christianson Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users Bill, I understand. My first Novice rig was an old Army ARC-5 (had to be converted to xtal control in those days), with a pair of 6146's in lieu of the standard 1625's. I had to *promise* my mentor, the owner of the rig), I would "promise" to keep the plate current within legal limits--I did. Bad part of that setup was it did not use grid block keying, but rather Cathode keying with 625v across the Morse key. A few jolts , and you learn your lesson. I was resricted to 80 meters only, but get this, in a 50KC bandwith for Novices, I had over 30 xtals. I learned how to grind suprplus crystals on a piece of ceramic, and Comet cleanser. Guest Angel Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users Hi Bill, I did go to classes on the computers in '92. They had Novell at the University. We used DOS and Lotus 1 2 3. I took a class in '98 on the Windows '95. The first personal computer I had at home was Windows 95. No modem. I used the ones at the University to access the internet. Windows '98 was self-taught. I never opened a computer myself. I have so much electricity in my body, I let someone else do the stuff in the tower for fear of *blowing up* the components. I would like to learn more about the computer's components. I cannot get into those classes here. Those are available only to the computer science, etc. students that are working for a degree. Guest Bill in Co. Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users LOL, this all sounds sooooo familiar. But it's sure been awhile.... It's really too bad the hobby of amateur radio (and actually a LOT of other things in society) have gone the way they have. :-( And I miss the good ole days of the 807s, 6146s, and the homebrew (and not off the counter, appliance operator operated), radio equipment. Guest Bill in Co. Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users Interesting, Angel. And they won't let you take such classes over there without "pursuing a degree"? I would think you could register for them in some non-degree seeking status, as long as you met the prerequisites. But you'd probably have to pay for these, degree seeking or not. Sometimes you can audit courses, too, but the trouble with just auditing classes is that you really don't learn as much, since there is (often) no real committment to the course like there is when you are taking it for a grade. :-) Angel wrote: > Hi Bill, > I did go to classes on the computers in '92. He wrote me a month ago telling about his latest project being an application that allows the user to right click a chm file and it ends up being decompiled and converted to web help ready for publishing. Anyway, again I wish you the very best blessings getting the kinks out of your current medical situation.. Rick
Guest Angel Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users Bill, They won't let us audit some of the classes. This is what the *Senior Guest Student* program is, auditing. I always buy the books and do the stuff involved. Of course, they charge a fortune to be a regular student unless you can get a grant. When I take the classes, some of the professors don't have you do the assignments or the tests. Teachers do not want to be bothered with grading the papers involved. I think I even study harder than some. I don't miss the classes unless it is icy . I still study for the classes even when I cannot go for some reason or other. Like you say, you can pay for the classes. You have to pass the entrance exam to do get into the classes that are reserved for students, AFAIK. I was a college teacher for 30 years (probably still am, if I start looking a bit more). Although being a teacher these days, and some of the things you have to put up with today (in terms of what is and isn't allowed, the expectations for the students, documentation, justification, what has to be on the syllabus, etc, etc), is something else. Not so good, anymore. > I think I even study harder than some. I don't miss > the classes unless it is icy . I still study for the classes even when I > cannot go for some reason or other. That is good. But you have to keep in mind that you, (like me), are old school, and brought up with some of those old school values! (I was born in the 40's). > Like you say, you can pay for the classes. You have to pass the > entrance exam to do get into the classes that are reserved for students, > AFAIK. Guest Dan Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users Cool, you can be like a grandmother as long as that is not too insulting to you, Angel.
Guest Dan Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Re: open letter to W98 users BTW, I enjoy debating people about controversal topics like religion and politics because I enjoy many viewpoints. My minor was cultural anthropology at the University. I find that email is a safe route because then you do not get everyone angry at you and you can stop emailing each other if someone is insulted by you. I am not looking for a date. LOL!!
