Why does Media player 11 not see my CD burner?

I can not burn a CD with Media player 11.  I can drag the songs in the play list but at the top where media player used to tell me how much space I had left on the blank CD it says "connect a burner and restart the player".  The burner works because I

can burn a CD with other software, but I like media player much better. I even bought a new external burner and it can't see that one either.
