Can't put screen into hibernate

I recently installed Windows 7 using a new Gateway PC. I now cannot get the screen to go dark when not in use. like I could in XP. My monitor is a new Samsung LED.

What I want is to have the screen go dark after a hour or so of non use, and be able to bring it back quickly by moving mouse or pushing a key. I have tried changing all the settings for screensavers and power saving options but the screen still stays lit all

day, even with no use for several hours. What am I overlooking? Welcome suggestions.
