Last night when I was shutting down, I got the message "install update and shut down".  I chose that and this morning when I started Windows, I found that all of the data associated with my programs were missing and the start screen was as if I had just

installed Windows 8.   The programs were there but no data.  I chatted with a Microsoft support person who told me that Microsoft does not support OEM installed software.  She suggested a system restore, which worked.  But, what went wrong and can I trust

auto update any longer?
