Problems with NVIDIA driver update

A NVIDIA driver update for NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS was included in a MS update package for Windows Vista.  MS has classified it as "Important".  It has destabilised my system (bluescreen messages, random shutdowns, refusal to shut down).  I have resolved

the immediate problem by reverting to before the download date, but the troublesome update keeps downloading.  I have blocked installation, but how do I delete the download and stop it downloading again?
