Internet connects

Hi, I just bought a Dell Laptop with Windows XP and connected to my domain at

work. When I am at work I can connect to the internet through the domain and

direct to the modem. However, when at home I am not able to connect either

directly or through the wireless system. I called Dell and the determined the

computer was working properly and they suggested that when I connected to the

domain, the internet configurations were set only for that connection. How do

I connect using other internet connections?

Re: Internet connects

If your Home ISP is Broadband Cable or DSL) and you have a Cable/DSL Modem

and no Router and the Modem is always ON and you have directly connected

your laptop with the Modem using the existing Ethernet Cable, you may try

to:

1. Launch "New Connection Wizard" and follow shown on screen instructions or

see below for step-wise method.

A. Click Start >Programs> Accessories > Communications>New Connection Wizard

B. In the "Welcome to the New Connection Wizard" click Next

C. Click and target the radio button of "Connect to the Internet" and then

click Next

D. Click and Target radio button "Setup my connection manually" and then

click Next Next

E. Click and dot the 3rd option "Connect using a broadband connection that

is always on"abd then click Next.

F. Click Finish

Hope this help.

If you have done this and has prob Post error message is any.

Re: Internet connects

Were you able to connect to the home system prior to connecting to

the office network?

Depending on security settings on you wireless router at home, you

may need to configure your router to allow connection of this new

laptop via the wireless adaptor. I assume you mean by 'connecting

directly' that you mean using a network cable to connect you laptop

directly to your router? If so, and this is also not working, it may

be that your TCP/IP network configuration has static IP information

configured.

By default Windows is setup to obtain IP address and DNS server

information automatically, but when you had your computer added to

your office network, the settings may have been manually set - thus

breaking your ability to connect at home either by wireless or wire.

Home routers are typically configured to setup computers with the IP

and DNS information automatically. If your office is using static IP

information, you may need to change your home network setup to match

the IP address range that your office uses so your computer can work

in both places.

Did you add the laptop to the office domain yourself or did an IT

person at your office do it for you? If your IT person did it, ask

them to help you with this issue. They can at least tell you if they

are using static or dynamic IP addressing and what address range they

use.

Hope this gives some ideas/solutions.
